Name

The name “Denza” is derived from its Chinese name Tengshi (腾势). The term roughly translates to “rising power and momentum” or “soaring momentum,” signifying the brand’s ambition for rapid growth and strength in the premium electric vehicle (EV) market .

History

Formation and Early Years (2010–2021)

On March 1, 2010, BYD and Daimler AG signed a memorandum of understanding to develop electric vehicles. The partnership was formalized with the establishment of Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology Co., Ltd. in May 2010, with both parties holding equal stakes . At the time, the collaboration aimed to combine Daimler’s expertise in automotive engineering and safety with BYD’s leadership in battery technology and electric drive systems .

The brand name “Denza” was unveiled in March 2012, followed by a concept car debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2012 . The first production model, initially referred to as the Denza EV (later Denza 300/400/500), launched in September 2014 . Despite high ambitions, the early years were marked by disappointing sales, with the brand selling fewer than 3,000 units annually between 2015 and 2018 and recording a cumulative total of approximately 23,000 vehicles in its first decade .

Restructuring and Turnaround (2021–2024)

In a significant restructuring move in December 2021, Mercedes-Benz reduced its shareholding in the joint venture from 50% to 10%, selling a 40% stake to BYD. This gave BYD a controlling 90% interest and operational control of the brand, with BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu taking over as chairman of Denza .

This marked the beginning of a new era for Denza. In August 2022, the company launched the Denza D9, a large luxury MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) available in both all-electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants . The D9 proved to be a turning point, resonating strongly with Chinese consumers seeking premium family transport. Denza’s annual sales surged from just 9,803 units in 2022 to 127,840 units in 2023 .

Full Acquisition by BYD (2024–Present)

On September 14, 2024, Mercedes-Benz transferred its remaining 10% stake in Denza to BYD, making Denza a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Shenzhen-based EV giant . Mercedes-Benz executives also stepped down from Denza’s board of directors, signaling a complete separation while leaving the door open for future technical collaborations .

Following the acquisition, BYD has positioned Denza as a crucial link in its brand matrix, sitting between its mass-market “Dynasty” and “Ocean” series and its ultra-luxury brand Yangwang . The brand has since accelerated global expansion, launching in Europe in early 2026 and introducing models to markets like Australia and the Middle East .

Technology

As BYD’s technology flagship, Denza models feature cutting-edge innovations from its parent company.

  • e3 Platform: An 800-volt architecture that debuted internationally on the Z9 GT. It supports ultra-fast “Flash Charging” capabilities of up to 1,500 kW, allowing a charge from 10% to 97% in approximately nine minutes .
  • Blade Battery: Denza vehicles utilize BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, known for high energy density and safety. The Z9 GT, for example, packs a 122.5 kWh battery offering ranges of up to 1,036 km (CLTC) .
