In the rarefied world of electric hypercars, where milliseconds are lifetimes and numbers are bragging rights, the Aspark Owl Roadster has staked its claim at the summit. It promises an almost incomprehensible feat: surging from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it 1.72 seconds. This figure isn’t just a statistic; it is a statement, placing the Owl Roadster firmly among the fastest-accelerating production vehicles ever conceived.

The story of this velocity began years ago. Aspark, a Japanese engineering firm, launched its electric hypercar project in 2015. By 2021, the fixed-roof Aspark Owl prototype had already achieved that headline-grabbing 1.72-second 0-60 mph time on a track in Greece. This breakthrough validated the company’s vision and laid the technical foundation for what was to come.

The Engineering of a Thunderbolt

Achieving such violent acceleration requires a ruthless focus on power and physics. The Owl Roadster’s heart is a quad-motor electric powertrain, with a motor at each wheel, delivering a colossal 1,953 horsepower and 1,920 Nm of torque. To harness this power, the car employs a state-of-the-art torque vectoring system for maximum grip and an ultra-lightweight construction using carbon fiber for the monocoque chassis and bodywork.

The Roadster variant adds a new dimension to this performance: freedom. It transforms the coupé into a convertible, featuring an open-top design with an emergency umbrella-style soft top. Aspark describes this evolution as capturing “the sense of freedom and joy that can only be felt by opening the roof and driving with the wind”. Remarkably, this conversion to a roadster involves only a modest weight increase, with the car weighing approximately 2,050 kg.

Proving Performance on the World Stage

Beyond the staggering acceleration claim, the Owl platform has proven its extreme capabilities in official record-setting runs. In May 2023, the fixed-roof Aspark Owl set two Guinness World Records at Elvington Airfield in the UK:

  • Fastest average speed over an eighth mile by an electric car: 192.03 mph (309.02 kph)
  • Fastest average speed over a quarter mile by an electric car: 198.12 mph (318.85 kph)

These records, certified by the UK Timing Association, underscore the car’s ability to maintain blistering acceleration far beyond the initial launch. Furthermore, in June 2024, the Owl SP600 variant, a specialized evolution of the original, claimed the title of the world’s fastest electric hypercar by reaching a top speed of 438.7 km/h (272.61 mph) at the Automotive Testing Papenburg track in Germany.

A Machine for the Few

As with any pinnacle of automotive engineering, exclusivity is guaranteed. Aspark plans a strictly limited production run of just 50 units for the Owl line. Each car is a bespoke masterpiece, hand-built by Manifattura Automobili Torino (MAT) in Italy, with a price tag starting at €2.9 million (approximately $3.5 million). Owners can customize colors, leathers, and stitching to create a truly individual space.

The Aspark Owl Roadster represents more than just a collection of record-breaking numbers. It embodies a specific philosophy for the electric age: that silent, emission-free power can deliver a sensory experience more intense than any internal combustion engine, now coupled with the visceral thrill of open-air driving. It is a statement that in the quest for ultimate performance, electricity has not only caught up but has begun to set a new standard, one electrifying millisecond at a time.
