Changan's Solid-State Battery

Chinese automaker Changan has confirmed it will begin test installations of its highly anticipated “Golden Bell” (Jinzhongzhao) solid-state battery in vehicles and robots before the third quarter of 2026 . This moves the next-generation battery technology one step closer to mass production, which is scheduled to follow in 2027 .

The Golden Bell pack is an all-solid-state battery, marking a significant leap from the liquid and semi-solid electrolytes that dominate today’s electric vehicles (EVs) . According to official specifications, the battery achieves an energy density of 400 Wh/kg. For context, this is substantially higher than most current lithium-ion packs and would allow a passenger EV to travel over 1,500 kilometers on a single charge .

Beyond range, Changan claims the battery is significantly safer. By integrating AI-powered remote diagnostics, the company states the solid-state pack is 70% safer than traditional liquid-based batteries . The technology is part of Changan’s broader “Golden Bell” battery brand, which was first unveiled in November 2023 and encompasses eight different cell variants with a planned total production capacity of up to 150 GWh .

While the performance figures are impressive, analysts point out that the path to commercialization remains challenging. The company faces hurdles related to high material costs, production yield rates, and an immature supply chain for key components like solid electrolytes . Changan aims to navigate these obstacles by 2027, with a gradual scale-up towards full commercialization expected after 2030 .

The move places Changan among a growing list of automakers, including BYD and Geely, racing to commercialize solid-state technology, which is widely viewed as the “ultimate form” of power batteries due to its potential for higher energy density and improved safety .
