BYD’s premium offshoot, Denza, has officially taken the wraps off its most ambitious model yet: the Denza Z, a production-ready electric coupe poised to challenge established sports car icons like the Porsche 911 . With nearly 1,000 horsepower on tap and a promotional push from a familiar face former James Bond actor Daniel Craig the Denza Z is signaling a serious intent to conquer the global performance market.

A Halo Car with Star Power

Denza, which began as a joint venture with Mercedes-Benz before BYD took full control in 2024, is positioning the Z as the crown jewel of its lineup . The production model stays remarkably faithful to the striking Z Concept unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show, ditching the concept’s massive rear wing for a cleaner, more production-feasible design though a higher-performance variant with a large carbon-fiber wing has been spotted in leaked photos .

The car’s global debut is scheduled for the Goodwood Festival of Speed this summer, and Denza is pulling out all the stops to generate buzz. The company has partnered with Daniel Craig for a promotional campaign aimed at expanding its presence across Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa . BYD executive vice president Stella Li described Craig as the perfect embodiment of “strength, sophistication, and authenticity” that aligns with the Denza brand .

Mind-Bending Performance and Technology

While official powertrain details remain under wraps, all signs point to the Denza Z sharing its electric architecture with the Z9 GT. That model utilizes a tri-motor setup powered by a 100-kWh Blade battery, delivering more than 952 hp (or approximately 710 kW) . Early reports suggest the Z will match or even slightly exceed this output, placing it firmly in the realm of nearly 1,000 horsepower .

Beyond raw acceleration, the Z is loaded with cutting-edge chassis technology designed to make that power usable. Key features include:

  • Steer-by-Wire: Eliminating the mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and front wheels allows for variable steering ratios and even enables the steering wheel to fold away when parked .
  • DiSus-M Suspension: This magnetorheological suspension system allows for real-time, independent control of damping force at each wheel, promising exceptional body control and ride quality .
  • Trick Maneuvers: Inheriting technology from the Z9 GT, the Z is expected to perform “crab walks,” “tank turns,” and even low-speed drifting into parking spaces .

The Porsche 911 Rival

Denza is not being subtle about its ambitions. The company openly positions the Z as a direct rival to the Porsche 911, a benchmark in the sports car world for decades . Spy shots have already caught prototypes testing at the Nürburgring, suggesting Denza is serious about tuning the car for genuine performance credibility .

The Z will be built on BYD’s advanced platforms, supporting ultra-fast charging capabilities (up to 1,500 kW with the Flash Charging 2.0 system) and offering a driver-focused, tech-heavy cockpit . Production is slated to begin in 2026, with the UK and other European markets confirmed as key targets for the halo model .

With a former 007 agent leading the charge and specifications that rival the world’s best, the Denza Z is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing electric sports car debuts of the year.
