In the world of electric vehicles, where sleek designs often hide sealed components accessible only to certified technicians, a group of Dutch students has created a compelling alternative. Named ARIA (Anyone Repairs It Anywhere), this bright blue prototype city car is built from the ground up on a philosophy of user empowerment and long-term sustainability, challenging the very logic of modern automotive manufacturing.

The Design Philosophy: Simplicity and Accessibility

At its core, ARIA is a response to a growing problem: modern EVs are becoming increasingly complex and difficult to repair. Batteries are often integrated into the chassis, parts are proprietary, and independent mechanics struggle with access. The TU/ecomotive student team from Eindhoven University of Technology, collaborating with Fontys University and Summa College, designed ARIA to invert this logic.

The entire vehicle is constructed from standardized, discrete modules—including the battery, body panels, and interior electronics—that can be individually removed and replaced. To make this practical for any owner, the car comes with a built-in toolbox, clear manuals, and a companion diagnostic app that reads the vehicle’s status and guides repairs.

Key Innovations: From Battery to Bodywork

The most radical departure from convention is ARIA’s power system. Instead of a single, heavy battery pack, it uses six independent modules, each weighing about 12 kilograms (26 pounds) and accessible from the vehicle’s side. If one module fails or degrades, an owner can simply detach it by hand and slot in a replacement—a process the team compares to changing batteries in a remote control—avoiding the massive cost of replacing an entire battery pack.

The exterior follows the same principle. The car features quick-release body panels that click on and off the frame. A scratched or dented panel can be replaced in minutes, and removing a panel provides instant access to the components behind it for further repairs. This design, created by a Summa College student, prioritizes repair speed over traditional, permanent construction.

A Statement for the “Right to Repair”

ARIA is more than a technical project; it’s a policy statement on wheels. The team is aligned with Right to Repair Europe, a coalition advocating for regulations that make products easier to fix. While the European Union has adopted right-to-repair rules for many electronic products, passenger cars have largely been excluded.

“Right to Repair is about giving control back to the user. That’s exactly what we are doing as well,” says team manager Taco Olmer. The students hope ARIA will inspire policymakers to extend these directives to the automotive market and show manufacturers that sustainable, repairable design is achievable.

Specifications and Practical Realities

ARIA is designed as a compact city commuter, not a highway cruiser. It has a theoretical range of 220 kilometers (about 137 miles) and a top speed of 90 km/h (56 mph). Weighing approximately 650 kilograms, its specifications are modest but suited to its urban mission.

It’s important to note that ARIA is a working concept prototype. The student team has no immediate plans for commercialization, meaning its long-term durability on real roads is unproven. Furthermore, its modular approach, while excellent for reparability, could introduce new challenges in weather sealing and connector reliability over time that integrated designs avoid.

The Bigger Picture: A Catalyst for Change

ARIA enters a conversation already featuring other modular concepts, like Kia’s PV5 for commercial fleets. What sets ARIA apart is its singular focus on enabling owner maintenance rather than commercial reconfiguration.

Ultimately, ARIA serves as a powerful proof of concept. It demonstrates that if a team of 30 students can build a user-repairable EV in a year, the industry’s move toward sealed, non-serviceable designs is a business choice, not a technical necessity. By showing what’s possible, ARIA challenges the automotive industry to prioritize longevity and owner empowerment, steering toward a future where cars are built to last, not to be replaced.
